Presentations at PDAC 2015

The¬†presentations at the 2015 Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada’s Convention featured special guests, letter writers, government officials, company representatives and technical leaders in the field of mineral exploration and mining.

Two of Zimtu Capital‘s equity holdings made presentations at PDAC 2015. In the corporate presentations, Patricio Varas of Western Potash Corp. (TSX: WPX) discussed its progress in developing the company’s Milestone potash deposit in southern Saskatchewan. In December 2012, along with AMEC of Americas, Western Potash completed a Feasibility Study on the project. Including its IPO in May 2008, the company has raised in excess of $140 million CAD from institutional and retail investors.

During the technical presentations, Steve Williams of Pasinex Resources Ltd. (CSE: PSE) gave the presentation: “The Importance of Mineralogical Studies at the Core of Success for Geometallurgical Programs“.

A summary of the presentation is as follows:

Geometallurgical programs aim to forecast a mine block performance or output, whether it be from a comminution perspective or from a metallurgical process perspective. The computation of this output is carried out by a geometallurgical model (a mathematical model) that is applied block by block across the deposit block model. This mathematical model should be rooted in those geologically independent variables that most logically relate to the metallurgical process result. Inevitably, and because it is intuitively correct, many of these variables are mineralogical parameters. Mineralogical parameters fundamentally influence mineral beneficiation, leaching and also comminution. Comminution performance is driven by physical aspects of the rock (fractures at both the macro and micro level) but also by mineralogical type, content and texture.

This presentation will introduce us to why mineralogy is so important to geometallurgical programs and then give examples of this in the realms of grinding, flotation and leaching. Examples of the use of mineralogical parameters in geometallurgical models will then be shown. The talk will then take us to some of the future challenges where mineralogical investigation can show benefit to geometallurgical understanding and hence improve geometallurgical programs. Finally, it will be shown that mineralogical advancement is the cornerstone to the continued development of geometallurgy.
